Lesson 3

Using Function Notation

These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 4, Lesson 3 support success in that lesson.

Lesson Narrative

In this lesson, students practice using function notation by relating it to their previous understanding of graphs. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students go into more depth interpreting function notation in situations. Students are supported by focusing mostly on points in this lesson so that a deeper understanding of the situation can be achieved in the Algebra 1 lesson.

Students must make sense of the problem and persevere in solving it (MP1) when they draw a graph of a function that has specific properties. Attending to precision (MP6) is also important when interpreting function notation as points on a graph.

Learning Goals

Teacher Facing

  • Convert input/output pairs in function notation into coordinate pairs and back.
  • Draw a graph of a function with given parameters presented in function notation.

Student Facing

  • Let’s use function notation to talk about points.
