# Lesson 11

Zeros of Functions and Intercepts of Graphs

These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 6, Lesson 11 support success in that lesson.

### Lesson Narrative

The purpose of this lesson is to strengthen connections between zeros of a function (input[s] when the output is 0), the output when the input is 0, and the coordinates of the intercept(s) of a graph of the function. Taken as a whole, this lesson can be considered a warm-up for the warm-up in the associated Algebra 1 lesson, when students will identify the coordinates of the intercepts of a graph of a given function. In the activity *Intercept Detective*, if students are given an authentic opportunity to make sense of the task, this is a chance to make sense of problems and persevere in solving (MP1).

### Learning Goals

Teacher Facing

- Given different inputs and outputs of a function, find the corresponding output or input.
- Recognize patterns in input and output values that correspond to intercepts on a graph.

### Student Facing

- Let’s see what happens when a function’s input or output is 0.
