Lesson 14

Interpreting Representations

These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 6, Lesson 14 support success in that lesson.

Lesson Narrative

The purpose of this lesson is for students to practice extracting information about a context from representations that model the context. Then, to answer questions about a similar context given a model. This prepares students for the associated Algebra 1 lesson, where they will be answering similar questions with less scaffolding. Determining information about a context from a representation is an example of contextualizing (MP2) and is a crucial skill in modeling with mathematics (MP4).

Learning Goals

Teacher Facing

  • Compare different situations modeled by different representations.
  • Extract information about a situation that is modeled by a quadratic function using different representations of the function.

Student Facing

  • Let’s interpret tables, graphs, and equations.

Required Preparation

Note that the tools for creating a visual display are only needed if you choose for students to use them to present their work in the last activity.
