Fingerprint Animals (optional)

### Lesson Purpose

The purpose of this lesson is for students to use their understanding of numbers 11–19 to make a number book.

### Lesson Narrative

This lesson is optional because it does not address any new mathematical content standards. This lesson does provide students with an opportunity to apply precursor skills of mathematical modeling. This lesson builds on students’ previous understanding and experiences with writing and composing numbers 11–19.

In this lesson, students make a number book with pages of fingerprint animals for the numbers 11–19. They arrange the animals in a 10-frame so that it is easy to see the number as \(10 + \boxed{\phantom{3}}\) and write matching equations like \(10 + 4=14\). Then they put the numbers in order and read the book together.

- Cut each blackline master in half. Each group of 3 needs 9 half-sheets.
- Each group of 3 needs an ink pad.
